I find writing about and reflecting on my experiences with patients, offers a deeper insight into my role as a medical student and future doctor. Usually it is the simple things, a friendly smile or a simple “hello” which make all the difference to a patient. I hope that by writing about moments when the simplest gestures have a larger positive impact I can remind myself to continue to make those gestures and inspire others to do the same.

A memory of helping a patient with dementia whilst volunteering in my local hospital as a prospective medical student – patient details have been changed to preserve confidentiality.
