Dementia Centre Seminar

Thursday, 14 September, 2017

Speaker: Dr Fiona Marshall (University of Nottingham)

Title: Betwixt and Between; the importance of place and space in rural dementia friendly communities

Abstract: This presentation builds on the current Scaling the Peaks Rural Dementia Study by exploring liminality from the fields of human geography, sociology and medicine which can help our understanding of the impact of place and space among those living and working in rural communities. The presentation provides food for thought in the ways in which we may conceptualize dementia and how dominant paradigms may be less relevant for rural dwellers living with dementia. Drawing on study observations, interviews and identification of differing models of community care, this presentation aims to challenge the current cultures of care as urban centric and discusses why these cultures may be difficult to assimilate into rural cultures of being.

This will be held at 11.30am in Room A08 at the Institute of Mental Health, University of Nottingham Innovation Park, Triumph Road  Nottingham
