Detecting dementia: the first steps towards dignity

While we are a long way off a cure for dementia, new techniques might help us in the drive to identify it earlier, explains Tania Browne

As a teenager, I lost my grandfather. But he wasn't dead. He still had his favourite music, he still loved to walk in the woods and name the flowers and plants, and he loved his soap operas. He was alive, but gone. A dignified man, a former aircraft engineer and oil company salesman, reduced to the status of a bewildered toddler lost in a shopping centre.
