The power of friendship in helping people with dementia

Friendship is being used to counteract some of the dementia's worst effects on people with dementia and their carers. Face-to-face chats, trips to the pub and seaside, and golf games can tackle isolation and boost self-esteem, helping both to continue living their lives.

That’s the finding of the leading dementia charity the Alzheimer’s Society, which has declared its befriending service a success.

In fact, demand for volunteers’ time in the Bridgend area is soaring, leading the local branch of the charity to call on more people to come forward and take on the role ahead of national Befriending Week, which runs from this Sunday.
